3 Tips For Men Going Through A Divorce

Law Blog

Divorce is always a tough situation for both partners. But there is often a stigma or idea in today's society that male breadwinners end up having to give up the most during the divorce process. Obviously, this is not always true but it can still make the divorce process especially nerve-wracking for men. If you want to make sure you get through your divorce financially and emotionally intact, here are three tips to keep in mind.

Don't Be Too Proud When It Comes To Alimony

Alimony is when one spouse has to provide financial support for the other after the divorce and it's often given out if there was one spouse who was financially taken care of during the marriage. It's common for both men and women to want to hold a grudge in this situation and not pay anything to the other party. But agreeing to pay at least something does have some positive benefits. First, you may avoid dragging out the case and increasing your own legal fees in the process. Second, alimony is tax deductible, so if you keep your eyes focused on the big financial picture post-divorce, it might not hurt you as much as you think. At the same time, if it is decided that you, the male, should be paid alimony by your bread-winning ex-wife, don't be too proud to take the money.

Stay Positive When Communicating With Your Wife and Kids

If there are children involved in this situation, you'll want to choose your words carefully. Never bad mouth your wife in front of your kids during the divorce process. Anything you say to your kids or to your soon-to-be ex could end up getting back to the court. You want to demonstrate that you are putting your children's interests first at all times.

Consider a Settlement

The longer your divorce drags on, the more it is going to cost everyone involved. In some situations, it might be best to reach out to the other side and offer settlement talks. To be clear though, you should always have your own divorce lawyer before discussing a settlement with your wife. Be willing to give up at least some of your property if it will move things to a conclusion. For all you know, you might end up having to give up the same amount of property or more if it actually goes before a judge. Sometimes swallowing your pride and just moving on is the best solution for everyone.

If you are a man who is about to go through a divorce, make sure you have legal help on your side before you begin. Maintain a positive attitude with your spouse and children and be willing to negotiate the terms of the divorce and you will at least have a chance of being able to move on with a good chunk of your finances still intact.
